Coros, Suunto, Polar, Wahoo, Apple Watch: exporting your watch track for 3D terrain
Interfaces shown for illustrative purposes. COROS, Suunto, Polar, Wahoo, and Apple Watch are trademarks of their respective owners. Epic Trace is an independent service and is not affiliated with any of them.
All GPS watches record the same thing: your position, point by point, throughout your outing. This track is what allows us to create a 3D topographic relief of your route, set against the real terrain.
If you have a Garmin, our Garmin Connect guide is waiting for you. If your watch is synced with Strava, the easiest way is the direct connection to the configurator. For everyone else, here is where to look.
The format no longer matters
Depending on the application, the export is called GPX, FIT, or TCX. It doesn't matter: the Epic Trace configurator reads all three. Take whichever one you are offered, import it as is, and the track will be automatically extracted. No converters, no manual work.
The sensor data contained in FIT and TCX files—heart rate, power, cadence—is simply ignored: only your route counts. The details of the three formats are in GPX, FIT, or TCX: which file should I use?
COROS
In the COROS app, open the activity, then the share menu or the three dots in the top right. Look for "Export data": several formats are offered, including GPX and FIT. The file is saved to your phone or shared to your computer. The training.coros.com website offers the same export from the activity page.
Suunto
In the Suunto app, open the activity and tap the three dots in the top right, then "Export": GPX or FIT, depending on your choice. Planned routes can also be exported as GPX from the maps tab.
Polar
The export is done from the flow.polar.com website, not from the mobile app. Open the session in your diary, then look for "Export session" at the bottom of the page: GPX or TCX. Both are fine.
Wahoo
In the ELEMNT app, open the session and use the share button: the FIT file of the outing can be sent by email or saved. This is the file you need to import, without changing anything.
Apple Watch
Apple's Fitness app does not offer track exports. Two simple ways:
- if your workouts are synced to Strava, use the configurator's Strava connection;
- otherwise, a third-party health export app (HealthFit, RunGap, or equivalent) reads your workouts and saves them in GPX or FIT.
Two useful checks
Was the GPS active? An indoor session, on a home trainer, or in a pool has no track. If the application does not show a map for the activity, there is nothing to export, and the configurator will indicate that the file contains no points.
Is the outing in several pieces? Watch stopped and restarted, battery dead, change of discipline: you may have several files. Our merging tool combines them into a single track, or you can keep up to three tracks, each in its own color.
And then what?
Upload the file to the configurator, frame the area that best tells the story of your adventure, visualize the 3D piece, and place your order. The relief is 3D printed and mounted on a solid oak base, in France. The full process is in our step-by-step configurator guide.
